Up for auction is a Commemorative Roman Bronze coin issued unofficially (barbarous type) by Constantine I from 330-340 AD.

This coin was issued to commemorate the city of Rome during a period in which Constantinople was becoming more influential within the empire (to assure the populous that Rome was still an important centre).

During the crisis of the 3rd & 4th century there was a widespread shortage of currency across the Roman Empire which sparked a rise in unofficial issues of coins from the provinces to meet a growing demand for small change.
