During this period, there were over 25 claimants to the throne, mostly from the military sector who occupied their short and bloody reigns by restoring breakaway provinces within the empire, defending against barbarian incursions and fighting amounts rival claimants. This period also saw the rapid increase in coin production in an attempt to address the economic crisis accompanying the political/military crisis. The threat of hyperinflation was met with the rampant debasement of the silver content in coins, with the Antoninianus denomination seeing a reduction from over 50% silver in 218 AD to under 1% by 270 (restored to 5% by Aurelian in 271 AD)
